Our Tuition

The two main strands of our tuition offer are First Access (Whole Class Ensemble Teaching), and Individual/Small Group Tuition.

First Access

First Access is one of the key initiatives of the government’s National Plan for Music Education.  The aim of First Access is to introduce students at Key Stages 1 – 3 to learning an instrument through weekly whole class instrumental lessons. Plymouth Youth Music Service (PYMS) supports First Access delivery in all Plymouth Primary and Junior schools. In order to achieve this, we provide a comprehensive musical offer comprising a range of high quality and diverse fifteen hour courses.

Each course includes built-in planning and CPD. You may select which KS2 year group you would like to receive the First Access delivery and each class in that year group is entitled to two fifteen-hour courses across the academic year. An annual contribution of £720 for two courses represents just 30% of the actual cost. The Department for Education invests in your school by providing the remaining 70% of the cost.

Individual & Small Group Tuition

Learning to play an instrument is a valuable skill which can become a life-long passion.  Plymouth Youth Music Service tutors deliver lessons across the city.

Group size can be from individual up to 4. We recommend the lesson length to be between 20 – 30 minutes, depending on age and ability.

Individual and small group tuition is booked for a minimum of one hour per week.

Delivery for the academic year 2024/25 costs £48 per hour. This includes provision of the instruments in most cases.

We offer a range of instruments:

Brass (e.g. Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn)

Woodwind (e.g. Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone)
Strings (e.g. Violin, Cello)
Guitar, Ukulele, Keyboards, Piano, Drum kit
Singing – including choir
